History Lesson - Maulidur Rasul

Family Tree
My Dear Amin,

Today Ibu is giving you a history lesson about our beloved prophet Muhammad saw (pbuh - peace be upon him).

Last Tuesday we celebrate the birthday of our prophet. He was born on 12 Rabiul Awwal (22 April 571 AD) in the family of Banu Hashim, a direct descendent of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). His father died when he was still young and his grandfather, Abdullah, took care of him. As a custom at that time, each child was entrusted to a Bedouin-foster mother in the desert so that the child becomes strong and healthy. His grandfather passed away while he was at his foster home. Soon after he came back from foster home, his mother passed away. He was only 8 years old then. He was then taken care by his uncle, Abu Talib, who was a generous man but hardly able to provide for his family.

Due to hardship, Muhammad had to learn earning his livelihood at a young age. He became a shepherd and when he turned 10 years old, he followed his uncle to Syria to do business. As he grew older, his name became known across Arabia. He was respected by various tribes and helped to revive an institution, which was known as 'Pledge of Virtues'. Members of this institution pledged themselves to 1) keep peace among various tribes 2) to protect travelers from attacks on their journey 3)to help the poor and needy and 4) to protect the weak from their oppressors.

Muhammad had a noble character. His piety, good manners, honesty and trustworthiness made him a respected by everyone and had no enemies. And thus, people gave him the title 'Al-Amin', which means the trustworthy. And my dear son, that's why Ibu agreed to name you Amin when Ayah suggested it. Ibu hope you will grow up with this noble character. Not only will you gain all the good things in this world, but you will also gain the hereafter. All the luxuries in this world are temporary, but you still need to work hard and be successful and respected in this world, and use your wealth to gain great abundance in the hereafter for eternity.

At the age of 40, Muhammad received the first divine revelation in the month of Ramadan.

‘Read, in the name of Allah who created (everything). He created man from a clot of blood. Read, your Lord is Great who taught you but virtue of the pen that which you did not know.’

On 12 Rabiul Awwal, 632 AD (11 Hijrah), Prophet Muhammad passed away at the age of 63.
