Last Saturday we were in Kajang, overnight at my mom's. After dinner, we went to visit our friend's house in Bandar Baru Bangi. I haven't seen Sharm for several months. Baby Reyes is now 5 months old, going to be 6 months old soon. While the fathers (Aswi and Remy) went out to watch football game, the mothers (Sharm and I) shared stories about our babies (Amin and Reyes). Amin was fascinated by the toys while Reyes kept smiling looking at me and his mama. Finally, around midnight they both were tired and went to sleep. We left at 12.30am. Sharm and I had a good 3-hour catching up stories, but still, not feeling enough. We probably have to do this more often.
Sunday morning, Amin was playing with his cousins. As usual for breakfast, I fed him fruit and this time, I gave him Mango. I've given him Mango several times before and he was ok. He ate less than usual. Even yesterday, he didn't finish his lunch and dinner. He just ate half of what he usually eats, and after that he was not interested in the food. His body was a bit warm but no fever. I didn't force him to finish the mango. I thought he just wanted to play with his cousins. Then few minutes later, he threw up... and A LOT! All the mango came out from his mouth and also his nose... Gosh, I was so scared. He took a short nap afterwards. when he got up, we took him to the Kajang Plaza Medical Centre.
While waiting for the doc, we gave him about 3 oz of milk. He looked very hungry after vomitting. Not long after he finished the milk, it was our turn to see the doc. I told her what happened and suddenly, Amin vomitted again. Oh, poor guy He looked so weak.... Doc said his throat is red. Amin has infection in his throat and also his intestine, that's why he's vomitting. Also, he has diarrhea. Gosh, I felt like I was going to cry. Doc suggested us to give small portion of milk (2 - 3 oz) and frequent so he won't get dehydrated. As for the diarrhea, we need to stop giving green vegies for the moment. Maybe because I gave him spinach on Friday, he started having diarrhea.
Later that afternoon we went home. Amin must get lots of rest. At home, every time I gave him milk, he would vomit. Then he got so weak and just went to sleep. But I still need to give milk so he won't get dehydrated. I had to take a shower several times coz Amin was vomitting all over me. I cried several times... I'm sure it's painful for him since it came out from his nose as well...
Monday, my mother in law stayed and took care of Amin. That day, he changed diapers 7 times and vomitted several times. Tuesday he was a bit better. He could drink milk but still couldn't eat. His diarrhea is getting better now. He has lost few weights and still look cheerful at times.

Eating healty guide for healty and smart child.
|
|
I arrived a bit early at work today. Instead of going straight to office, I stopped by at a magazine shop to browse around. As usual, I will look at Pa&Ma magazine. Then, next to it I saw a magazine/book from the same publisher. It's actually an eating guide for healty and smart child (Panduan pemakanan anak sihat & pintar). I just grab it and went straight to the counter to buy it.
First thing I did when I got to the office was checking out this book. I flipped through the pages and found interesting advices and suggestions on what to cook based on baby's age. The age ranges from 6 months all the way to pre-school years. I am so excited! I always enjoy cooking for Amin. I would like to encourage all my friends to do the same. Yes, I know sometimes after work, you are so tired. But if you can make some time, it's really worth it. Seeing your child so eager to eat and enjoy the food, all the stress goes away..
And for my muslim friends, when you prepare the food, you can also read a verse from Quran: A tii 'ullah wa a tii 'ur rasool wa ulil amri ming kum. (Taatlah pada Allah, taat pada rasul dan kedua2 orang yg menjaga kamu). Mudah2an, dah besar nanti jadi anak yg soleh. Some people said, berdoa itu untuk org yg lemah. I totally disagree. I think prayer gives you strength because you talk directly to God and you know God hears everything. So when you feel down, it gives you strength, it gives you hope and always believe that God will always grant your wish, only a matter of time.

Amin loooves to eat.
|
|
Lately, the weather is very hot so we had to rearrange our bedroom furniture. Amin's baby cot was placed next to our bed, by the corner. However, that area is usually warm even though we turn on the fan. We do have air conditioner installed in our room, but we don't usually use it. We moved Amin's cot at the end of our bed since it's closer to the fan. Now Amin can sleep much better. So now Aswi and I had to sleep facing the wall, so our head is next to the baby cot.
Amin wakes up about twice at night. Lately, he goes to sleep around 9.30pm or 10pm and then wakes up at 1am and 5am, roughly. When he wakes up in the middle of the night, he cries a bit. I don't usually pick him up right away. After a few minutes, he will stand up facing me and cried a bit louder. I can feel his small hand touching my hair, to wake me up. When I turn my head to look at him, he either smile, knowing that I am awake, or cry louder to be picked up. So I will pick him up to calm him down and give him milk so he can go back to sleep. Sometimes when he wakes up at 5am, he doesn't want milk. I give him a little bit of water and let him play in his cot. After about 15 - 20 mintues, he will go back to sleep.
Amin loooooves to eat. Everytime he sees ppl around him eating, he would want some. I'm a bit worried because he's been constipated for the past couple of weeks. I've been giving him rice with veggies (sweet potatoes, carrot and peas) and also fruits (papaya and mango) to help him. Sometimes I completely skip the rice and only give him veggies and fruits. One thing he doesn't like much is drinking water. Maybe that's why. Even though he's been eating a lot, he's able to maintain his weight for the past 1 month at 9.2kg. He is now 65cm tall. He's been very active crawling around and climbing chairs. Recently, I added tofu in his menu. Amin's babysitter has been giving him yogurt as well. So far, he has not rejected any food we've given him...

Weekend at Janda Baik
|
|
Last Saturday we went to Janda Baik for a swim trip. Amin, as usual, always excited when he gets to play in water. This time, Pak Ngah Bobby (Aswi's brother) came with us.
Then on Sunday, we went to Tok Bah's (my father) house. He finally was able to come home after staying in hospital for 6 weeks. We just had a small thanksgiving ceremony.
Amin's new favorite spot in the house is now under the dining table. He likes to stand whenever he can and when we take him for a 'walk', he would smile and gets so excited.

Cerita Hari Jumaat
|
|
Amin anakku,
You were born on August 9th, 2005. Dalam Calendar Islam, Amin lahir pada 3 Rajab 1426. For your information, Rajab is one of the most sacred months in Islam. It is the 7th month in Islamic Calendar. Bulan ini juga disebut 'bulan Allah', so dlm bulan ni, dinasihatkan supaya banyak beribadat.
Antara sejarah2 Islam yg berlaku pada bulan ini:
1. Nabi Nuh a.s. membawa pengikutnya naik kapal dan setiap pengikutnya berpasangan.

Chunk of Meat, that's what Amin's babysitter (K Jee) call him... For a 7-months old, he's definitely a chunk of meat. My sister sometimes call him Michelin boy. We went to my mom's over the weekend. Saturday afternoon, my sis-in-law's brother had a kenduri and invited us over. When we arrived, we let Amin played in the living room. And there, he saw a fascinating toy, a laptop. He went straight to it and start pounding on the keyboard. We kept calling his name but he just ignored us. There he is, my future Bill Gates... Definitely has ibu IT brain.
Later that night, I was helping my mother with my sister's wedding invitation card. I let Amin played. He kept crawling under the dining table. After several times of trying to persuade him to play with other toys, I finally let him play by the table. At first he was OK. He was babbling and then a few minutes later, he was crying as hard as he could. He hit his head on one of the chairs. See, Ibu told you not to play there, but since you were so stubborn, I let you learn the hard lesson.
My mother (Tok Ma), came rushing to the rescue and try to console him. Sure enough, there was a bump on his forehead... Amin's first bruise...
He's getting very active and smart. Everytime he saw me in the kitchen and heard the blender, he would look at me and babbling.. uhhh, uhhh... He knew I was making his food. And when I didn't give him the food fast enough, he would get angry and kept saying uhh, uhhh.... It's difficult to get him drink his milk nowadays.
As of today, I've given him rice, sweet potato, carrot, peach, banana and peas. I think he should be able to start on finger food, but not sure what to give him yet. I think I'll make him sweet potato fries or boiled carrot stick.

Turning 7 months old

Ibu, look... I'm standing...

My dear Amin turns 7 months old today..... He grows so fast
Now when we put him in his baby cot, he likes to stand. Ayah, it's time to lower his cot so he won't fall over. The cot is not exactly his favorite place, especially when he's trying to go to sleep. He would toss and turn and everytime he turns, he's stuck, and then he started to get angry and cry (screaming is more like it... ) And when he sees me, he would scream louder to get my attention. Once I picked him up, he would stop cry and smile. What a brat! But love him anyway...

Starting solid

Starbucks baby....

When Amin reached 6 months old, we started giving him solid. Even though some suggested that by 4 months baby can start solid, our pedeatrician recommended us to wait till Amin is 6 months old since he's already an overweight boy.. When he was 5 months, he already showed interest in food. Everytime we sat for dinner, he would stare at the food on the table and sucking his thumb. Poor guy. He was able sit when we put cushion on his back.
So when he became 6 months old, I started to make some rice porridge, steam carrot and blend them together. First time I gave him, he was so eager to eat as if he had eaten them before. And when I didn't give him soon enough, he would try to grab the food himself.. I've been giving him rice poridge and carrots for almost a month now. When we went to redang, I bought those rice cereal, ready-made carrot, sweet potato and peaches (Gerber brand). I could only find Gerber brand and Nestle brand. Amin loves all of them.
I'd rather give Amin homemade food than buying the ready-made one. There are variety of rice cereals but when I looked at the ingredients, there are so many things that I don't even know what it is. And I definitely not going to feed my son those 'extra' ingredients. Once in a while is acceptable (like when we go for travelling to redang last weekend). Even that, I found the most simplest rice cereal. For the carrot and sweet potato, they only add water, so I'm ok with it. For peaches, they add 'vitamin c', so I guess that's ok as well.
So lately, all my readings are related to baby homemade food. I think Amin is quite tired with carrot, so I'm going to give him banana and sweet potato this week and next week. Peaches are imported fruits, so it's quite expensive to buy. I might buy the ready-made once in a while. Oh, I also want to start giving him apple. Since Amin started on solid, he has reduced drinking his milk. He used to drink 5oz milk in one sitting. But now, he usually drinks till 3 oz. Also, he's very curious about his surroundings, so once he finished his 3oz milk, he start to turn and crawl. After playing for about an hour, then he would like to drink a few more oz of milk.
Anyway, here are some of my resources on homemade baby food.

1992, that's when I left Kuala Terengganu (KT) and never had a chance to go back there till a few days ago. Aswi's friends came from France and went backpacking across Malaysia. We decided to join them in Redang for our family vacation. I was so excited since it was my first time in Redang, first time going back to KT after 13 years, and especially first trip with Amin.
We left on Thursday, March 2nd, early morning at 7am. We arrived in Cherating at around 10am. Aswi's friends already stayed there overnight. We picked them up at Pantai Cherating (Cherating Beach) and continue our journey to KT. We arrived around 1pm. We stopped by at the famous market in KT, Pasar Payang, for lunch and for Aswi's friends to get some souvenirs. The city has definitely changed a lot. I couldn't remember most of the places, except for the market and the Batu Burok Beach. 13 years ago, a few of my girlfriends and I went out to the city without getting any permission. We went out through a back door. We had fun went to the market and stayed at the beach. By the time we came back, it was around 8pm and we were busted. We were caught and were punished. Everybody was surprised since most of us were known to be the 'good' girls, no bad records... hehehe... That day was August 31st, 1992, a few months before our final exam (SPM).
At 4pm, we left KT and went to Merang, approximately 30km north of KT. On the way to Merang, we stopped by at our old school, MRSM KT. Now there's a swimming pool. All the wooden dormitories were replaced with sturdy bricks building. The girls dormitories are now located at the back, behind the water tower (yes, the famous water tower where the guys and girls used to hang out at 1 or 2 in the morning). The boys dorms are now located where the girls dorms used to be. We didn't stop to take pictures since I was holding Amin and he was asleep.
In Merang, we stayed at Sutra Beach Resort. It was a nice resort, next to the beach. I found a 50% discount on the internet, so we stayed in a deluxe seaview room. The next morning at 8.30am, we went to Merang Jetty, which is about 5 - 10 minutes drive away from the resort. Initially I was worried to take Amin in a boat for the first time, especially when it was very windy. But then, it was a big boat and I was a bit relief. We took the 10 o'clock boat and the journey was about 45 minutes to Redang Island. When the boat started to move, Amin just sat quietly on my lap. Then about 10 minutes later, he was fall asleep and I had to hold him on my shoulder all the way.
In Redang, we stayed at Laguna Redang Resort. It was a beautiful resort and has a beautiful beach. When everybody else went snorkeling at the Marine Park, we took Amin by the beach. We also took him to swimming pool at the resort. He was so happy to play in the water. When we took him out of the water, he would scream and kept looking back at the water. Overall, he was a good boy. He only cried when he's hungry, tired or sleepy but forced himself not to sleep. He's very friendly with other people. Everywhere we went, people wanted to hold him and he didn't even cry. He smiled and always curious about things around him.
We stayed there 3 days and 2 nights. Sunday morning, we took the 9am boat back to Merang. We dropped off Aswi's friends at KT's bus station since they were on their way up north to Kota Bharu (KB). We went back to Pasar Payang to do some shopping and had lunch before went back to KL. On the way home, we stopped by at Bentong (Aswi's parents) to pick up the rest of Amin's belongings. By the time we arrived home, it was around 10.30pm. It was a tiring journey but a wonderful weekend.
Thank you honey for the lovely trip. I'm also happy because now Amin is home for good. I can see him every single day, even though sometimes he's cranky and temperamental.
